2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Price and Review

Alfa Romeo released their all new Giorgio platform back in 2015 with the new Giulia sedan. The platform is a rear wheel drive design which is the first one in Alfa’s past 20 years. This platform is mostly made out of aluminum and high-strength steel, so it is relatively light for its size. On the new platform, they also revealed the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover, a medium-size two-rows SUV.

This uses the same rear wheel drive layout as the sedan with an optional all-wheel drive mode as well. Even though it might be their first crossover, the Stelvio is actually a far better car than most people expected. It offers a nearly perfect weight distribution; the engine is mounted behind the front axle while the design is at least on part with most of its German rivals.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Price and Detail

As you would expect, the car is not all that great in off-road even though it is a crossover. The ground clearance is slightly higher than that of the sedan. Despite that, the approach and departure angles are not great due to the car’s low front and rear bumpers. One of the best parts about the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the fact it offers all the strong points of the sedan with none of the drawbacks. It has a more usable trunk, and it offers more room for the rear passengers. Its price is also quite close to the sedan, so Alfa is offering a really comprehensive package all things considered.

Exterior

There is no question about the fact the Stelvio looks like a true Alfa Romeo. They somehow managed to transform the sedan’s great proportions into something just as impressive in crossover form. The front end boasts the same tall center grille and aggressive intakes in the bumper. The headlights wrap around the front fenders for an aggressive look while the top end model even gets heat extractors in its hood. The rear end is closer to that of a hatchback in design. The window has a really aggressive angle to it, and the roof spoiler makes the car seem much lower and wider than it really is. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio boasts dual-exhausts as standard, but the QV model gets four exhausts, a much larger diffuser as well as a considerably lower ground clearance. The wheels are wide across the range giving the car a squat stance that is highly appreciated.

Interior

Unlike the exterior, the interior of the Stelvio doesn’t have too many Alfa design cues. For starters, it looks nothing like what we used to get from the Italian manufacturer. Instead, it gets roughly the same cabin as the sedan meaning it basically looks like a German car. The dashboard offers all the controls within the driver’s reach while the design is rather minimalist. There is a minimal amount of buttons, and all the materials are way above what Alfa Romeo used to offer. On top of that, the build quality is also great, and we could go as far as saying the car feels more expensive than many of its German rivals which are not an easy feat to achieve. Considering the rear seats now offer more headroom than the sedan, the car has no real drawbacks when it comes to its cabin.

Engine

There are three different engines available with the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The base models get a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four gas powertrain offering 197 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. The same engine can also be had with 276 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque giving it improved acceleration and top speed. There is also a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel which offers 178 or 207 horsepower and 330 or 350 lb-ft of torque respectively. The base diesel is the only engine available with a six-speed manual. All the others come with an eight-speed automatic while all-wheel drive is standard across the range.

The top end QV version of the car gets the same 2.9 liters twin-turbo V6 as the Giulia. This is a Ferrari developed and built engine. Thanks to that it offers 505 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque allowing the Stelvio to sprint to 60 MPH in just 3.9 seconds. On top of that, it gives the car a maximum top speed of 177 MPH making it the fastest in its class by a good margin.
