2018 Ford F-150 Diesel, Release date, Price

UPDATE:  Mar 7, 2017. What was the most sold car manufactured by Ford in 2016? And in 2015? And a year before? The F-series is the best series in the history of Ford. It has reached the 13th generation and over 950,000 units were sold last year in the US and Canada. The American car manufacturer always pays special attention to the F-150, and the 2018 Ford F150 has the best performances so far. It debuted at the 2017 North American Auto Show in Detroit, and it attracted a huge number of visitors. The 2018 model brought some new features and improvements, and we tried to gather the most important ones.

2018 FORD F-150 PRICE

The price of the F150 has been increased in the last several years, but the 2018 Ford F150 costs only $300 more than the previous model. Almost all trims got this increase in price. Many believe the American pickup truck will reach $40,000, but Ford needs to find ways of keeping the price down in order to stay competent. There are many similar rivals on the market which price is way under $40,000.

 

REVIEW

In general, it won’t be completely different than the previous models of the same generation. Whole bodywork and interior have remained the same as before. When it comes to the exterior front and rear part are significantly different and these parts faced the biggest changes. However, the biggest surprise is under the hood. The new model unexpectedly got new powertrains with improved fuel efficiency. Also, you will be satisfied with safety systems, but let’s go step by step.

UNDER THE HOOD

There were not many speculations telling us the 2018 Ford F150 would get new engines, but it did! The whole lineup has been changed, except one engine. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost six-cylinder has remained a part of the offer for 2018. It was completely revoked last year; thus engineers offered the same engine this year as well. It is also offered with Raptor. The base engine is a 3.3-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder. The 3.3-liter comes with both direct and port injection which significantly improves its fuel economy. It delivers 282 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque.
Apart from these engines several more units are offered, such as a 2.7-liter EcoBoost six-cylinder and 5.0-liter eight-cylinder. Finally, the lineup is completed by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder. This engine has been improved and generates 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. All of these engines have improved fuel economy which is a great advantage for the F series. These pickups have never been known as the fuel efficient trucks, but they are going in the right direction. Their fuel economy is still not around the average so they must put more effort.

2018 FORD F-150 EXTERIOR REDESIGN

The front part has been completely redesigned. At the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, we had a chance to see F150’s new headlights, grille and front bumper. The grille of the 2018 Ford F150 is much larger than the grille on the 2017 model and it has a hexagonal shape. Ford didn’t use similar grille before. Two horizontal bars are splitting the grille and running into the headlights. However, there are some trims without these horizontal bars. Some trims even have faux intake openings. At the back we got a new tailgate and redesigned taillights. There are some trim levels that even have the “F150” stamp on the tailgate.

INTERIOR REDESIGN

As you already know, the cabin hasn’t been changed a lot. The F150 got a major update of the interior two years ago and Ford decided not to pay too much attention to the cabin. The interior is equipped with glare-free materials and comes in several different trims. Seat material depends on the trim and it is usually cloth or leather. The SYNC 3 infotainment system won’t come in all trim levels, but it features Android Auto and Apple Car Play for the first time. Some of the other features are top-notch audio system and 360-degree camera, while the moonroof is definitely among the best advantages.

COMPETENCE

Pickup truck market is growing and there are more and more pickups on the streets. We can write several articles just about the 2018 Ford F150’s main rivals, but in this review, we will focus only on two – 2018 Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. Their prices start at $30,000 for the base model, while the top trims cost around $50,000. Tundra got a facelift two years ago and the last model doesn’t come with plenty of updates and modifications. On the other hand, the Titan was overhauled and now comes even as a regular cab option. When it comes to the powertrain, the most powerful engines of these two trucks deliver around 380-390 hp which is way more than new F150 can offer.

Released nearly two years ago, the aluminum F-150 managed to take a good part of the market for itself, and it now dominates the US truck market. This for a good reason. The vehicle is smooth, powerful, quite efficient for its class and it also uses the newest technologies available on the market. However, it seems that in this highly competitive market, Ford will release an update sooner than expected. The upcoming 2018 Ford F-150 is expected to be the first major update of the truck which should include a few more things than just mild exterior changes. A new engine is likely going to be launched, and on top of that, the truck is also going to make use of beefier parts.

The basic design will not change from the previous model, and we can say that for sure because Ford used a few camouflaged test mules so far. Recently, these shed a lot of their camouflage, and it seems that the cosmetic changes have been kept to a minimum. The price, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. The new F-150 2018 is already one of the most expensive models in its class starting at over $28,000. The 2018 truck is expected to get that price even further. Also, a new engine choice will bring the mid-level trucks to nearly $50,000 in which case it will become one of the most expensive offerings in its class by a big margin.

2018 FORD F-150 DIESEL AND PETROL ENGINE 

There are four different engines choices currently available on the F-150. The upcoming 2018 Ford F-150 should bump that number to five. The four current petrol engines will remain unchanged. The base models will still get the 3.5 liters naturally aspirated V6. However, this time around this may receive a small bump to around 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7 liter twin-turbocharged V6 should be carried over unchanged with its 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque.

Those wanting a V8 will still have one choice, the Coyote 5 Liter with 385 horsepower and 387 lb-ft of torque. The top of the range model will still have the 3.5 liters EcoBoost V6 but this time around it may offer close to 400 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque.

The biggest change here will be the fifth engine, most likely a diesel. It seems that Ford may use Jaguar’s 3 liters turbocharged V6 diesel unit on their trucks. This would perfectly fit Ford’s new ten speed automatic. Also, with close to 250 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, it should easily outrun any of its direct competitors. If Ford goes through with it, the F-150 will become the most efficient truck in its class for sure. The 10-speed automatic is also likely to be used on the other engines available with the F-150 which will improve its fuel efficiency slightly.

CHANGES AND DESIGN

Unfortunately, while the changes under the hood are going to be impressive, the 2018 Ford F-150 should be pretty much the same as before everywhere else. The design of the truck will be mostly identical to the older truck. We could see new headlights and tail lights as well as a more impressive tailgate, but that should be it. Its interior, on the other hand, might impress us with a better infotainment system as well as better build quality. We do hope that Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system is now going to become available across the range, at least as an option. Also, their automatic trailer steering system might also be added. This was first released on the F-350 a few months ago, and anyone who used it has praised it.
