After a few years back Toyota showcased the RAV4 Adventure. Finally decided to reveal the production model a few months ago. The 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure is not really an all our off-road machine but something more in the lines of a capable crossover. Over the usual model of the RAV4, the Adventure brings quite a few upgrades inside and out meant to make the car considerably better value for money than otherwise.

In Detail: The car’s chassis and most of the powertrain don’t change a bit over the regular RAV4. However, the Adventure does come with a tweaked running gear. This boasts different springs and tweaked shocks, so the Adventure offers a slightly higher ground clearance than the usual car. On top of that, the car gets 18-inch black alloy rims wrapped in all-season tires. While not idea for off-road, the tires are actually better than those on the regular car. For those looking to get the car where most wouldn’t there are off-road tires available for these 18-inch rims, so the RAV4 Adventure is certainly going to impress.

The Design: Likely one of the most impressive aspects about the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure is the way it looks. The car is clearly based on the facelift version of the RAV4, but it does get a few unique details. There are all new black body inserts on the fenders. These not only give the Adventure a bulkier look but they also protect the body from debris in off-road. In the front, there is a new bumper with a protective silver insert while in the back it gets a similar shield too. The Adventure has been showcased in a unique red paint which will likely be seen on Toyota’s future model as well. The interior hasn’t changed much despite the big exterior revamp. The only real upgrade here are the Adventure badges, and that’s about it.

Under the Skin: The 2018 RAV4 Adventure boasts the same 2.5 liters naturally aspirated inline four gas engine. This is good for up to 176 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque which is roughly the average of its class. The engine drives either the front or all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Unfortunately, the Adventure doesn’t get any trick differentials. However, it does get a standard tow package which adds extra cooling for the engine and the gearbox. This allows it to tow up to 5,000 pounds which are actually considerably more than the usual crossover at this price point.

Feb 28, 2017 The current RAV4 has been released in 2012 but it actually received a facelift last year. The new car offers a really striking design which managed to impress quite a few people. Back in 2013 Toyota showcased a concept for the car with the Adventure. This combined the tough look of an off-road machine with large 20-inch alloy wheels and a unique color scheme. Unfortunately, the car remained just a concept. This changed at the start of February 2017 when the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure was released. This is no longer a concept but it is actually a production car.

2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure Price and Release Date

It will arrive in showrooms in the third quarter of 2017 and its price is going to be revealed closer to its release date. However, Toyota did say that the car will cost anything between $25,000 and up to $31,000. Because of that, it is safe to assume its starting price will be closer to $30,000 which would make for a really great purchase.

What is it?

The Adventure is actually a full trim level and not just a package. This has been designed as the off-road offering for the RAV4. While it will not allow it to rock-crawl, it should be more than enough to make the RAV4 a capable mild off-road machine. The trim level adds quite a bit over the regular model not only on the outside but also inside the cabin. Unfortunately, things under the hood remain unchanged so it still is barely adequate when it comes to the overall output of the engine.

Running Gear

The most evident change over the regular car is the suspension system on the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure. The new car is little over half an inch taller than before which has been achieved with new shocks and springs. Even though this is a really mild upgrade, it should allow it to go pretty much anywhere a crossover would without being hurt. With the raised suspension it also gets unique 18-inch rims wrapped in all season tires. The brakes remain the same as before.

The car gets the same 2.5 liters naturally aspirated inline four as the base RAV4. This engine provides 176 horsepower and little over 170 lb-ft of torque which is one of the least powerful engines in its class. So far they haven’t said if the 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure will come with a manual or an automatic. Considering this is a niche product, we would expect Toyota to offer both the six-speed manual and the six-speed automatic. No matter what the case may be, the Adventure will be available with both front and all wheel drive.

Unlike the regular model, the car will come as standard with the usually optional Tow Package. This will add a heavy duty radiator, an oil cooler as well as a transmission cooler. These will help it tow up to 2,900 pounds in FWD guise and 3,500 pounds in AWD guise. This is quite close to the class leader which tows 4,500 pounds with a much more powerful V6 engine. Even though the hybrid is still not on the engine list, it may become an option in the future, especially if the car will become successful.

Design

The new 2018 Toyota RAV4 Adventure is actually quite impressive to look at. Even though the lift is mild, the 18-inch black rims and taller tires make for a really aggressive look. Also, the high-impact plastic on the sides and the front and rear bumpers make for a really beefy design. The car gets wider wheel arches as well as a redesigned lower front end. The car showcased in February featured a unique color scheme which may eventually arrive on the production model of the Adventure.

Inside the Cabin

The design here is mostly unchanged from the usual model of the car. However, Toyota did add a few things to make it unique. There are new door-sill protectors as well as new floor mats which are both inscribed with the Adventure logo. Also, in the trunk, there is a 120V power outlet which is otherwise unavailable.

As an option, Toyota will offer the Cold Weather package which will bring heated seats and steering wheel as well as a heated wiper area. All unavailable on the regular RAV4 in the US despite being available elsewhere.
