2018 Toyota Supra Price, Release date

The most sought after/talked about the car is definitely 2018 Toyota Supra, at least for the sport cars lovers. The SUV enthusiasts are waiting for 2024 Bronco. But unlike Ford’s kingpin, which was popular only in the US, the Supra was a global phenomenon. Today we have another set of spy photos. You will be glad to see and hear that the vehicle looks production-ready more than ever.

Before, we only had prototypes carrying heavy camouflage up front and headlights that weren’t intended for 2018 Supra. In the pictures that you see below, it is clearly visible that the lights are production-intended. They have rectangular LED segments which are a clear sign of the finished car. But, since the time for its reveal is not just yet they are hiding rest of the car.

Anyway, these photos show that the vehicle is going to look a lot the FT-1 concept like it was speculated since the first time we saw prototypes of 2018 Toyota Supra.

It is important to mention that a few days ago there were leaks from BMW company. The information gathered from leaked documents revealed a lot about 2018 Supra powertrains. The car is as we already talked below in the article heavily related to BMW’s Z4/Z5 (we still aren’t sure about nomenclature). Now, it seems that the entry level of Toyota’s counterpart will feature a 2.0-liter turbo engine boasting 250hp. At the top of the range, you will find a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six equipped with 335 horsepower.

A lot of people were left disappointed with output numbers, but the engine might fair relatively well on 2018 Supra. We will talk more after the first test drive. What came as an even bigger letdown is the news that the only transmission available is going to be an automatic one. Not even a Toyota CVT but something from BMW’s kitchen. This is still just a rumor, but the documents leaked from the Munich-based company didn’t mention manual at all.

2018 Toyota Supra Release date

The release date of 2018 Toyota Supra is tightly connected to the one of the Z4/Z5. Latest reports claim that BMW’s vehicle will debut later this month ( August 2017) at Pebble Beach. It is evident that for some reason the German car has an advantage over the new Supra. Because of that, the Japanese sports car will have a later debut. It will without a doubt happen during this year. According to autoguide.com 2018 Supra will take a bow at Tokyo auto show which is on the program in October. Everyone is more than eager to see new Supra, and we will soon enough, but to purchase one, you will have to wait for 2018. Same goes for the Z4/Z5. Both cars will hit dealerships sometime in 2018.

2018 Toyota Supra Price

The biggest mystery is the price. BMW’s goal is for Supra not to take any of the sales of the Z4/Z5. In order to achieve this, the cars will be put in different segments. The German model will be sort of premium offering, while the Supra will be like a stripped down Japanese version of the Z4/Z5. Hence, the price will differ. Z4/Z5 will be in the region of $49,000 all up to $66,000 with a lot of options to choose. The 2018 Toyota Supra price will be in the area between $37,000 to $50,000 probably even less. With the price, there will come a lot less equipment, tech and comfort. With all of the hype surrounding 2018 Supra it just might come short of expectations. Maybe we just want too much and are being unreal.

Update, Jun 26, 2017. The fifth generation of the Supra is finally approaching the end of its development process. Thanks to that we were able to receive quite a bit more information about the upcoming 2018 Toyota Supra which may upset some people. As previously known, the car will be based on the same platform as the successor of the Z4. However, unlike the BMW, the Supra is going to be sold only as a two-door coupe.

Design – Impressive?

The model was spied once again testing on the Nurburgring and this time around it had no plastic cover panels at all. This allowed us to see the finished shape of the car and to our surprise, it looks vastly different than what first thought. For starters, it looks like the Supra will share its roof-line with the dual canopy and part of its design with the FT-1 concept car. This piece of information comes after Toyota started the Supra wouldn’t have much in common with the concept. On top of that it looks like in the front, it will boast two intakes on the sides of a center splitter which is also the same type of layout as on the concept.

Interior

Not only we managed to take a closer look at the car’s design, but its interior has also been spied a few weeks back. Even though it was still covered by black inserts, there are some fascinating elements. For starters, it looks like at least the prototype of the Supra had the same steering wheel, climate controls, iDrive infotainment system and iDrive swivel control as the Z4 successor. However, the car did have different seats as well as a slightly different instrument cluster.

No Manual?

With the new interior pictures, it became quite clear that the prototype of the 2018 Toyota Supra had an automatic gearbox. How do we know that? Well, the car had the same gear shift lever that can be found in pretty much any other automatic BMW on the market. Even though a manual is still possible, it is highly unlikely. Why? Well, the new Supra is a hybrid, and to make the best use of that hybrid system the car will have to come with an automatic gearbox. This will be able to choose the ratios better and offer a much faster response time than that of a human. The downside is that even though the car would be faster, it would rob the driver of the pleasure of actually driving the car without much aid which will likely be quite clear from Toyota’s sales numbers.

Only a few dared to predict the price of the new 2018 Toyota Supra. However, these are only rough estimations and we don’t want to give false information. One of the main competitors is Acura NSX. The price of the 2016 model is around $156,000, depending on the dealer and the package. With this price, NSX is close to Porsche 911 Turbo. Although we don’t know the price of the Toyota’s sports car it is certain the vehicle will cost significantly less than that.

The good thing is that the 2018 Toyota Supra will be introduced this year. It is still unclear when Toyota will present a new model, but the second half of 2017 seems reasonable. However, it is not going to hit the streets before New Year so we must be patient.

Specs

There are many mysteries about this car, but the biggest mystery is the engine. You can find many rumors regarding the powertrain, from four-cylinder to ten cylinders. Some websites say a hybrid can be placed under the hood, or even the powertrain used in Lexus LFA. However, it is most likely we’ll see two variants: gasoline engine and hybrid.

There are several facts that can back up these statements. Spy video of the car was released, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of an electric motor which is accompanied with the V6. A hybrid is definitely a surprise and the biggest improvement. Rumors are telling this combination will come with an output of around 400 hp which is staggering.

On the other hand, there is a high chance a gasoline engine will be the second option. Toyota and BMW joined forces and tried to gain synergy effect. New BMW Z5 and Supra were even spotted together in Sweden on the streets during test rides. Therefore there are reasons to believe that the powertrain used in new BMW Z5 will be under the hood of the new Toyota Supra. The cooperation between Japanese and German automaker has proved to be profitable for both companies and for drivers as well.

Spy Photos

Two new sports cars have been spotted in Sweden and thanks to a spy photographer we can see what they will look like. Both Supra and Z5 fans are excited to see these two for the first time and their modifications. They were carefully camouflaged, so the final design is still a mystery for all those expect people working on it. As many were predicting, the 2018 Toyota Supra will be based on the FT-1 concept developed in 2014.

 

Design

However, this doesn’t mean it will look completely as the FT-1. The first difference people usually notice is dropping fancy nose, reminding many of the Formula 1 cars. Headlights resemble more the GT86 than FT-1. The exhaust pipe won’t be integrated into the bumper and taillights are going to be narrower. Since this test mule is just a prototype we can expect some features to be completely modified. Therefore there is a chance to see a larger wing than we see in these photos. Generally, it will not resemble much the previous generation. In other words, it may not look as sporty as many of you expected.

In the photos only a few things are visible, but we managed to draw some conclusions about the interior. The style is going to be a combination of sports and luxury. A little less sporty though. In order to compete with the NSX, it will be wrapped in leather upholstery and come in aluminum trim. When it comes to technology, you shouldn’t be worried about it because Toyota will use the latest features in Toyota Supra 2018. All in all, we are happy to finally see this car on the streets and can’t wait to test it.
