MAY 29, 2017 UPDATE: The first generation of the Koleos hasn’t been all that successful. The car was based on Nissan X-Trail, but it featured a rather odd design. The all new Renault Koleos 2017, on the other hand, is a completely different beast. The new car is based on Renault’s CMF modular architecture, so it has a lot in common with the Kadjar or the new X-Trail. Thanks to the new platform the car is considerably lighter than its predecessor despite being considerably larger.
Renault Koleos 2017 Specifications
While it still has roughly the same wheelbase at just over 106 inches, the car is nearly 184 inches long, six full inches more than its predecessor. It is also just as wide and as tall, so there is quite a bit more room inside the cabin. This time around Renault did their best to offer a better car for on-road use, and we have to say that they did it. The Koleos boasts the same engines as the Talisman sedan, so it is quiet, fast and refined for how cheap it is. Depending on the market, the car comes with anything from a 1.2-liter turbo four with 130 horsepower all the way up to a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 with 150 horsepower. Some versions can also be had with a 1.6-liter turbo four with 200 horsepower.
Most markets will love the diesel though, and there are plenty of choices there as well. There is a 1.5 liter 110 horsepower unit, a 1.6 liter with 131 or 160 horsepower as well as a larger 2.0-liter diesel with over 170 horsepower. A 6-speed manual will be offered in most versions, but the car will also be available with a six-speed automatic.
Design
There is no question about the fact the Renault Koleos 2017 looks considerably better than its predecessor. For starters, the proportions are now similar to those of a conventional crossover. It has the perfect length and width, and it feels complete, unlike its predecessor. In the front, the car takes the design cues with the teardrop DRLs from the Talisman. The same happens in the rear where it has a very similar set of tail lights to those found on the sedan.
MAR 26, 2017 REVIEW: The Koleos was Renault’s first true crossover, but the car was not as successful as they hoped. Part of its failure was the design which made it look more like a hatchback on stilts. However, things change, and the newly released Renault Koleos 2017 is a much more impressive car. The new crossover is bigger, more luxurious, quite a bit more expensive as well as a lot stronger than before. With it, Renault finally completed their top end line of cars that includes the Espace, Talisman and now the Koleos. The three cars are all based on Renault’s modular CMF architecture, but the Koleos is slightly different as it shares quite a bit more with the X-Trail.
Renault Koleos 2017 Price and Release Date
The car is quite large by any standards. It is nearly five meters long, 1.9 meters wide and nearly 15 centimeters taller than its sibling, the Talisman. Because of that it also offers more space inside the cabin. Its 213mm ground clearance is class leading as well so it should allow the Koleos to go on unpaved roads or even in light off-road without any issues. The car will be available in certain countries starting with the autumn of 2016, but in Europe, it will arrive only at the beginning of 2017. The price will be quite similar for all markets where Renault is officially present. In the Europe, the car will cost between $29,990 – $43,990.
Diesel Engine
So far Renault hasn’t officially announced what engines the Renault Koleos 2017 is going to feature. However, they did say that the car will receive two petrol engines and two diesel offerings ranging from 135 to 175 horsepower. This pretty much means that the car will not receive the turbocharged petrol engines found in the Talisman which is a real shame. However, it means it will share most of its powertrain with the Nissan X-Trail. Depending on the market we should see a mix of the following. The two petrol engines are likely the 2 liters naturally aspirated mill which offer 143 horsepower or the larger 2.5-liter engine with its 175 horsepower. Both of these are average regarding performance or fuel consumption, but both of them have proven their reliability in the past.
The diesel engine will most likely be comprised of a single 1.6 liter inline 4 unit in two turbocharging states. The base turbocharged unit should make 130 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. A twin-turbocharged version of the same engine should also be available with 160 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. All four engines should be available with either a six-speed manual or with an automatic and front or all-wheel drive should be available. For the latter, Renault is also offering a center differential which is quite impressive.
One of the most impressive parts of the Renault Koleos 2017 is the way it looks. Somehow Renault managed to jump an entire generation from the odd-looking previous model to this gorgeous car. Most of the design is similar to the Talisman with the same front end and a similar back. However, even though it is taller, Renault somehow managed to offer a balanced look. The car can be had with up to 19-inch rims, and the color palette is quite broad. The only drawback of the exterior are the chrome lines that run across the front fenders which may be a bit too tacky.
Interior of New Renault Koleos 2017
Inside the cabin, there is a very similar story. Here, the car’s entire dashboard has been taken straight out of the Talisman so the large 8.7-inch touch-screen in portrait mode can also be found here. However, there is quite a bit more room both in the front and the back while the trunk is considerably bigger as well.
UPDATE: There is no real surprise on the interior. Even though the car shares quite a few design cues on the exterior with the Talisman, inside the cabin, it has more in common with the Megane. The two get the same type of infotainment center and center stack. However, the Koleos features a slightly wider center console as well as a different instrument cluster which takes it up a notch in terms of interior quality.
