The Ram 1500 is the third best-selling truck in the US, right behind the GM trucks and quite a far further behind the F-150. The interesting part is the fact the truck managed to remain competitive while being considerably behind its rivals when it comes to technology and features. This is finally going to change as the FCA Group finally revealed the all new 2019 Ram 1500.
Unsurprisingly, the truck is an all new model and it features many upgrades over its predecessor. It is faster, more capable and quite a bit more efficient than ever before. The big change over its predecessor is the frame. This time around the new Ram features a high strength steel frame which is quite a bit stronger than that of its predecessor. On top of that, it is also noticeably lighter with the new model being with up to 225 pounds lighter than before.
In detail
The wheelbase didn’t change over that of its predecessor. However, the entire running gear is all new. The new Ram features heavier duty front and rear axles which should withstand a much higher load than before. With the new axles the truck also received six-lugs wheels which should offer a much wider aftermarket selection than before while also withstanding a higher load. In order to help the truck with losing weight, they added an aluminum hood and tailgate into the mix. Even though this is not the full aluminum construction everyone was talking about, it is a step on the right path.
2019 Ram 1500 Release and Price
Even though the FCA Group revealed the new truck, it looks like the 2019 Ram 1500 won’t go on sale for at least a few more months. When it will hit the market, the base price is likely going to increase to closer to $30,000. This would make the 1500 one of the most expensive trucks on sale. Even so, it should still be well worth it, but more on that later.
Design
The front end of the new 2019 Ram 1500 is quite a bit better looking than ever before. The cross-hair grille is now gone from the range. Instead, the truck gets a hexagonal grille, honeycomb mesh and swept-back headlights that further accentuate its aggressiveness. On top of that, the bumper features a new off-road inspired look which should stand the test of time much better than before. The Rebel on the other hand is mostly identical to the one before it, so no real changes here.
All versions get a different cabin design which has a higher rake for the windshield. This not only allows the truck to be more aerodynamic but it also means slightly better visibility than before. Even though the rest of it is quite similar to the older model, there are a bunch of new features in store. There are new trim levels available as well as a new power lift-gate system.
2019 Ram 1500 Interior
Things changed dramatically on the inside too. The 2019 Ram 1500 can now feature a massive 12 inch touch-screen infotainment system which takes up most of the center stack. This supports all the screen mirroring technologies while offer a far better quality screen than before. The steering wheel is smaller too while the instrument cluster is more similar to that of a car. In fact the entire dashboard has a less vertical design which we definitely like more than what is currently available. We would have hoped for slightly more room inside but even so, the Ram 1500 remains at the top of its class.
2019 Ram 1500 Engine
For now the FCA Group showcased two different engines. It looks like the base 1500 will come equipped with a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6. This will feature 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The big different over the older model is the addition of an electric motor which adds another 90 lb-ft of torque when needed. The 5.7 liter V8 still makes 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. While on the V6 the electric motor is standard, the V8 gets it as an option. This adds another 130 lb-ft of torque which makes the Ram 1500 one of the more powerful trucks in its class. Both of them get an 8 speed automatic as standard and both of them are expected to be at the top of their class when it comes to fuel efficiency.
