2018 Ford Expedition Release date, Interior

UPDATE: Feb. 2017, The Expedition as we know it today is the only second generation of this large SUV despite the fact the vehicle was present at the market since the end of the nineties. No matter, even if it were third or fourth gen, it wouldn’t be important because the mammoth of Ford’s lineup is long ready for a redesign. The redesign is precisely what Detroit-based company did with the 2018 Ford Expedition.

Same as the F-150 new Expedition is built on the aluminum-intensive platform which makes this model much more lighter compared to the outgoing version. With body panels made out of aluminum, but nevertheless attached to a redesigned steel frame, the difference in weight between 2018 and 2017 MY is no less than 300 pounds. Being lighter doesn’t make it smaller, but in fact, 2018 Expedition is bigger than its predecessor, its wheelbase is longer by four inches while the L (the extended Expedition version) is one inch longer.

Ford didn’t only change Expedition on the outside, but it did the same with the interior of the SUV. With time progressing this vehicle now needs more tech and more Safety systems. Some of the equipment that you will find inside the cabin of 2018 Ford Expedition includes Sync 3 and Sync Connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.

Wireless device charging is positioned on the center console, and the Expedition now has an available Wi-Fi hotspot with a 50-foot range. It also has, what wasn’t present on the previous installment, six USB ports (two per row), four 12-volt power sources, and an 110-volt AC outlet which are standard, while a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system comes as an optional feature.

The clear sign that Ford did a serious job on 2018 Expedition is the inclusion of, no more and no less, than 40 features that this model didn’t have on the last generation. Some of these are, you understand that we can’t name them all, parking sensors, 360-degree camera, trailer backup assist, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, pre-collision system and blind spot monitoring.

Engine

Under the bonnet, there won’t be any significant changes. The new Ford Expedition 2018 will continue to utilize updated twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost which will be available with both port and direct fuel injection. As far as the output numbers go Ford didn’t state them yet, but Canadian car magazine motor1.com claims that 2018 Expedition will have 400hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the competition this puts the expedition above the likes of 355hp/385lb-ft 5.3-liter V-6 Chevy Tahoe in both segments and 420hp/460lb-ft 6.2-liter V-8 GMC Yukon regarding torque. It’s nowhere near the new Dodge Durango SRT, but that SUV is in a league of its own. With 2018 Ford Expedition Michigan-based company is saying goodbye to the old six-speed automatic transmission for an all-new Ford/GM ten-speed automatic which debuted on the all-new Ford F-150.

2018 Ford Expedition Release Date and Price

The model will be available in dealerships by the summer of 2017, and despite the changes, the price won’t go up. The outgoing model was available for the base price of $48,000 and $72,000 for the most expensive version of Expedition.

Aug 2, 2016, Review

Currently, the Expedition is based on a design more than ten years old, and it shows. While its engine is new and quite efficient, moving that massive car around makes it one of the less effective in its class. On top of that, it is not that great to drive, but it is quite comfortable. A new model has been rumored ever since 2013, but only recently Ford confirmed some of them. Also, not that long ago the car has been spied testing wearing quite a bit of camouflage on top.

Like before, the new 2018 Ford Expedition is going to share a lot of parts with Ford’s F-Series of trucks. The chassis, most of the cabin, as well as likely the interior, will also be shared between the models. This should allow them to keep to cost down and the price on the same level with the older model. We expect it to start around $47,000 in which case it would instantly become a best seller.

Changes: Interior and Exterior

The largest changes over the previous model will happen under its skin. For starters, the Expedition will make use of a more rigid and lighter high strength steel chassis. On top of it, an all aluminum body is going to be installed. The front end of the 2018 Ford Expedition, as well as its cabin up until the C-pillars, will be identical to the regular F-150. At the back, on the other hand, things are going to be a bit more interesting. Here we do hope that the massive glasshouse of the previous model will be used. This should provide the passengers with the third row plenty of light as well as give them a beautiful open space to enjoy. With the new body, the new Expedition will be able to shave more than 600 pounds of weight. This will instantly make it one of the lightest truck-based crossovers in its class.

With the new body, the entire running gear will be updated as well. A fully independent suspension system with larger disc brakes will be used. Also, while the off-road capabilities will be lower than those of the F-150, the Expedition should still retain some of the truck’s prowess. One of the most disappointing parts of the current model was the interior. The Expedition used pretty much the same dashboard design as the Super Duty series which was not ideal. This should change quite a bit with this generation. While on the outside it will still look mostly like an F-150, its cabin should be all new. We should see better materials, a much nicer driving position as well as more available space for all the passengers.

Engine Specs

A 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged V6 will likely continue to power the 2018 Ford Expedition. However, this time around the engine will be mostly new, and it will have more in common with the Raptor than with the regular truck. This is expected to make over 400 horsepower and over 450 lb-ft of torque. On top of the added output, the Expedition will more than likely get to use a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear wheel drive is still going to be standard on most models while the all-wheel drive system will be a $2,000 to $3,000 option.
Many said that for this model of the Expedition, Ford might also add a second engine to the range. This could be a 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 diesel borrowed from Jaguar. This engine could make 250 horsepower and over 450 lb-ft of torque, and it may become an excellent choice for those looking to tow stuff around on a constant basis. This should use the same ten speed automatic as the usual petrol engine.
