The Innova is a rather interesting car because it is based on a truck’s chassis. This means that it is usually better for driving on rugged terrain on uneven surfaces than many other cars out there. On top of that its actual towing capabilities and the available payload are usually higher as well. This makes it a great car for developing countries and this has been clear in India. The 2017 Toyota Innova Crysta has been released here back in May and it quickly racked up sales. In the first month, Toyota managed to take more than 30,000 orders for the car which is quite impressive.
2017 Toyota Innova Crysta Price
Thanks to its rather unique looks, great chassis, and powerful engines, the Innova managed to easily dethrone some of its rivals, and it is not the best selling MPV in certain parts of India as well as a few other countries. The car currently starts at roughly INR1.3 million which is roughly the equivalent of $21,000.
This is a great starting price for a car that offers this much space and versatility. Unfortunately, the Indian authorities decided to ban diesel cars over 2 liters in displacement from Delhi. This made Toyota lose nearly 7% of the total sales for the car. In order to get past this ban, they decided to quickly release the 2.7-liter version of the car which we are going to check out a bit later.
Design
The 2017 Toyota Innova Crysta is a lot better looking than the older model which was bland and not that inspiring. The new generation features a very similar front end to the 2018 Toyota Hilux or the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, the car features a hexagonal grille with the headlights raked towards the back for a very aggressive design. The front and rear bumpers are also quite interesting considering how tall the car is. Also, there is a small roof-mounted spoiler which completes the aggressive design of the car. The only real grief we have with the car is the fact that its wheels are a bit too small, but for a country, with rough roads, they are perfectly good.
2017 Toyota Innova Crysta Interior
The cabin of the new 2017 Toyota Innova Crysta is quite minimalistic and that’s good. The dashboard features very few buttons and the infotainment screen is well placed, so it won’t take much attention when driving. The climate controls are placed a bit too low but they are not all that inconvenient to use. The seats are good but there is little to no lateral support. The best thing about the car remains the massive amount of space available to its passengers.
Engines
Like we mentioned above, because diesel engines larger than 2 liters have been banned in Delhi, Toyota finally released the 2.7 liters naturally aspirated inline 4 for the Indian market. This engine makes a 164 horsepower which is better than the base diesel engine. The two diesel engines are still available in the rest of India. These are the 2.4 and 2.8 liters inline 4 turbocharged mills which can also be found on the Hilux.
The base 2.4-liter engine can make 150 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque which is more than enough for most people. However, the 2.8-liter engine on the top end model tops that with 177 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Both of these can easily tow more than 2,000 kilograms and both of them are more efficient than the petrol engine. All engines can be had with a six-speed manual or with a six-speed automatic. In any case, rear or all-wheel drive are available. It is worth mentioning that the diesel engines make slightly less torque when equipped with the manual in order to protect it from damage.
