2018 Chevrolet Colorado Release Date and Changes

The ongoing Colorado was released on the US market back in 2014. However, the truck was actually revealed all the way back in 2011, so its core design is quite old at this point. Most rumors suggest that it may receive a rather large mid-life facelift with the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. This will be likely targeted at the US market in order to prepare the truck for its upcoming competitors. The update is likely going to focus on its interior and exterior design and possibly on its powertrain. The chassis, as well as most of the running gear, are more than likely going to remain unchanged. With this new model, GM might also decide to offer more trim levels than before. The first step was made earlier this year with the off-road oriented ZR2, but others may be released in the near future.

Chassis

As we said, the truck is based on a chassis which is currently more than half a decade old. However, this doesn’t mean it isn’t just as capable as it was. In fact, GM is continuing to refine it, so the upcoming 2018 Chevrolet Colorado will likely be more capable than its predecessor. The chassis might get revised in order to offer slightly better structural rigidity without compromising the truck’s weight. The suspension setup, as well as the brakes, are going to remain unchanged on the base models. However, it seems the high-performance setup found on the ZR2 might be used on a second trim level. The 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will likely be carried over but the changes done to it will be smaller than those done to the regular versions of the truck.

Interior

The interior of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado is likely going to be quite close to that of the current model. The truck is expected to boast the same infotainment system as well as the same overall layout of the dashboard. However, the instrument cluster could be revised while the gear shifter might be replaced with a rotary knob. This would free up valuable space on the center console which would allow them to install additional auxiliary buttons or even new features such as an easier-to-use wireless charging system for mobile phones.

Engine

The base model will more than likely carry over the same 2.5 liters naturally aspirated inline four engine as before. With 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, this is not that bad, but it doesn’t excel at anything either. Some suggested that this engine will only be available on the fleet-only version of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. Further up the range, the 3.6 liters naturally aspirated V6 will be used but this time around it could get a boost to around 330 horsepower and over 275 lb-ft of torque. The 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel with its 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque is likely going to be carried over unchanged. We do hope GM will also decide to offer a smaller turbocharged gas engine, possibly their 2.0 liter inline 4. This would be able to offer around 250 to 280 horsepower and over 270 lb-ft of torque, basically bridging the gap between the two ongoing gas engines. The six-speed manual will stay, but the six-speed automatic is more than likely going to be replaced by a newer, faster and more capable ten speed automatic.
