2019 Ford Ranger Specs, Price, Release date

Update Jun 14, 2017 – The Blue Oval decided to bring one of its models back to the US. Like you know the vehicle that we are talking about is 2019 Ford Ranger. The extensive testings of this mid-size truck started some time ago, and now we have a fresh set of spy photos to present to you. The pictures are coming to us from Australia, courtesy of caradvice.com.au, and in a  moment when Raptor version of new Ranger was also spotted. Double reason to rejoice. The reason for why the photos are coming from the land down under and not from the States (where this pickup is going to be sold) is because most of the development will be conducted by Ford Australia.

From earlier we already know that 2019 Ford Ranger is not an entirely new vehicle but rather an improvement of a global model of this truck which is available in Europe and Australia since 2011. The 2019 Ranger intended for rest of the world will be an update of the ongoing installment. The US spec version will come with quite a few changes in order to adapt to the American market. The changes won’t affect general size and shape but will be more visual tweaks.

2019 Ford Ranger is going to be based on Ford’s T6 platform. This platform is body-on-frame and is underpinning current Ranger and Ford Everest alike. Both models are being developed at the same time, and together with them, Ford is planning another two models. One will be a return of legendary Bronco, while the other one is going to be a Ranger-based SUV which will be due in 2024. There is also a possibility that this Ranger-based SUV is actually 2024 Bronco because it is speculated that both 2019 Ranger and new 4×4 Bronco are going to share the same platform.

As far as the engine lineup is concerned, it is too early to guess anything rather just to say that Ranger in the US and the one intended for World’s markets are going to be powered by different units. The model which is already available takes power from two diesel mills: a 2.2-liter inline-4 with 158 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque and a 3.2-liter inline-5 with 197 hp and 346 lb-ft. The US spec version will probably be stripped of diesel options but rather offered with gasoline powerplants.

The production of this vehicle will start in 2018 in Ford’s Wayne, Michigan Plant. First showcasing is expected at 2018 NAIAS. The sales are expected before the end of next year, and the vehicle will be sold as 2019 model. Regarding the price, it is nowhere near to be calculated but looking at the current version, the market shifts, and the price of competition it will be priced in the region of $25,000. At the same time, the Raptor as mentioned earlier could reach the $40,000 mark. The competitors of new Ranger are going to be the trucks such as Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.

02/15/2017 UPDATE: Even if we had any doubts about the design of new 2019 Ford Ranger, some of them have now been cleared. From the spy photos we acquired from motor1.com, we can see some similarities between new Ranger and Ford’s F-150. Ford announced that Ranger is going to be produced in the US and now we have confirmation that is being tested on American soil. The platform which is now being tested with the mid-size pickup is going to be used on 2020 Ford Bronco. To satisfy American customers known for their love of originality 2019 Ranger is going to be different from European. On the front end, you can see two-row grille which is the same one that debuted on 2018 F-150. The lower front end is covered in more severe fashion, so it’s hard to say how will the final product look but it also seem like it will draw similarities like its bigger sibling. In the rear, we can spot anything that could give us a clear design cue, but if hey take anything else from their best selling truck it won’t be a mistake.

As far as the size of the vehicle goes, Blue Oval plans to bring two choices to the States. First one is four-door Crew Cab body style, and the other one is the two-door Super Cab. The former one would aim at the families while the second one would be work-oriented.

Moving into the powertrains, the 2019 Ford Ranger will have naturally aspirated V-6 and a turbocharged four-cylinder. Later down the road, a four-cylinder diesel would be added. These are not official information about powertrains but there is a big possibility of this claims coming out to be true. However, you shouldn’t expect anything bigger than a V6 under the hood. Abroad, the Ranger is offered with a series of the diesel motor, and some of them will find its way to the American market. However, there are just two possible prospects for US market. One is the 3.0-liter Lion unit which will also be first diesel ever heading into the F-150 in 2018. This powertrain is also available in US-market Land Rovers, where it makes around 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. That may look like a lot for a midsize pickup, and you are right.

However, it might be detuned to fit the Ranger needs. The other is the 3.2-liter diesel inline-five that Ford already offers in America in the Transit van and is already available in the Ranger in some of the world’s markets. This mill can create around 185 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and matches the Chevy Colorado’s 2.8-liter Duramax’s 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Whatever engines find their way under the hood of new Ranger, we’re anticipating the brand-new Ford-GM 10-speed automatic to be used for transmission. We’re keeping our ears open to the homecoming of the Ranger and Bronco so if we hear more information we’ll pass it along. Regardless of the engine, you will be able to choose either rear or all-wheel drive.

2019 Ford Ranger Release Date and Price

Regarding price, the entry level Ranger will be priced same as competitors such as Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma. This would make entry level Ranger cost around $25,000, mid-level would go above $30,000, and for rumored performance version of Ranger, you would have to part with more than $40,000. When it comes to release date, the thing is we don’t know when Ford may launch it in the US and we’re giving our best to find out. Early estimations claim that the new Ranger will be out before the 2018 ends and it will come as we already stated as 2019 MY. 2018 NAIAS in Detroit seems like a logical location for presentation of this truck, but this is purely our guess. If you read our latest update and saw photos of the test mule, you saw that work on this mid-size pickup is already underway, so we look forward to the information to come.

Review

The Ranger has released 34 years ago and it has quickly become one of the best-selling pickups on the North American market. The first model resembled the F-150, but it has got many distinctive features throughout the years. The first engine was a 2.0-liter which could generate 72 horsepower. Ten years later the second generation was introduced and Ranger got a significant improvement. A 4.0-liter six-cylinder delivered 160 horsepower which was more than double. The 2019 Ford Ranger is the future member of the Ford family and will have engines far more powerful than those used 20 years ago. Although the release date is still uncertain there are already a few rumors about it.

Rumors

In fact, there are lots of rumors about it. Some people are saying the American variant will be the same as its European sibling. On the other hand, many state new Ranger will resemble new generation of the F-150. Currently, we have two different opinions, and we cannot say which is true at this moment.

According to some Reddit posts, the 2019 model will come in two variants, as Crew Cab and Super Cab. The post has some sense of officialism and might be even true. After all, it is not so difficult to believe the American compact pickup will come in these two variants. However, the post doesn’t mention too much the final design of the new Ranger. It is even possible to share some features with Chevrolet Colorado. There are so many options, and we must hold our horses for some time until we find out the answer.

Under the Hood

The good thing is the Ford Ranger 2019 may have a strong engine lineup consisted of three different options. The most probable unit is a 3.2-liter inline-5 turbocharged diesel. This engine has been under the hood of the International Ranger for some time and it seems like a logical choice for the American variant. Usually American market is more demanding than the rest of the world when it comes to power, but the 3.2-liter with 185 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque it will deliver the goods.

The two other engines are believed to be petrol engines. Some sources are talking about either 2 or 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4. This unit will be more powerful than the base engine and it will generate 250 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The lineup is completed by the unit which should deliver around 300 hp. It is still unclear what engine will that be, but it will be the top of the offer. All of these three units are going to be mated to a six-speed manual while we still can’t guess how many drive modes it will have.

Design

Since there are so many possible solutions, we decided not to write much about the design. However, this section is going to be updated as soon as we find out new details. There are so many photos on the Web and we had to choose some but don’t take them to the bank. It is highly possible the final solution will have slightly different features than those shown in the photos. On the other hand, the cabin will probably be the same as the cabin of the international variant. This means there won’t be technological differences between these two.

Interior and Exterior

The best thing is that the Ranger is finally getting back on the American market. The break seems too long. However, it will not be launched in 2017, meaning we must wait for a year or even two before the 2019 Ford Ranger enters the production line. One key thing we need to mention is that Ford hasn’t officially confirmed the comeback of the Ranger. Unfortunately, these unofficial leaks and speculations are everything. Ranger may have strong engine lineup and at least two cab versions if this whole story comes true. We can just hope it will.
