NEWS MAY 23, 2017 / The Forester is one of the most practical crossovers currently available on the market. The current generation has been around for a while now, and it just received an update with the 2018 Subaru Forester. The biggest change is the addition of a new Black Edition package which adds quite a few things on the base engine car. On top of that Subaru adjusted the prices according to the current market conditions. This is not ideal because it means all versions of the Forester are now with $200 more expensive than before. On top of that, the top end trim levels are considerably more expensive because Subaru is adding more gear to them.
2018 Subaru Forester Price
The powertrain, as well as the running gear, remain unchanged. However, the 2018 model does get the new Black Edition package which adds quite a few things, mostly cosmetic upgrades. The price for this is just $1,150, and it is only available with the base engine and the Premium trim level. This means that the price for this Black Edition model will be at least $26,845 which is still a steal considering how much kit the car brings.
The Forester can be had with two different engines. The base model gets a naturally aspirated 2.5 liter flat-four gas engine which is good for up to 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, the five-speed manual, which is available on the base trim level, is not available with the Black Edition car. This will only come with a CVT gearbox. Luckily Subaru is adding a set of paddle shifters that allow the driver to select the transmission mode, so the CVT is still quite nice to drive. The top end model of the car gets a smaller 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four which is good for 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The interior of the 2018 Subaru Forester remains mostly the same as before. The only real upgrade over the regular car is on the Black Edition equipped cars that get a different upholstery. On the exterior, the changes are a bit more clear. Here the car gets all-black accents such as the mirror caps, the grille surrounds, and even the headlights insert. As standard, the Black Edition model also comes with 18 inches blacked out wheels and blacked out calipers which are a really nice touch. The result is a stealthy-looking vehicle that certainly manages to impress. The only real drawback remains the chrome insert near the grille which may or may not is removed in a later revision of the car.
UPDATE MAY 17, 2017 / The current Forester hasn’t been released that long ago but it seems Subaru is already readying a successor for it. In fact, the 2018 Subaru Forester update has already been spied on the open roads in Japan, and so far it looks like they will move the car to a new platform. The new Forester is more than likely going to share its chassis with the new Impreza which is underpinned by Subaru’s modular front-wheel drive chassis. The camouflaged car seen in Japan had roughly the same sheet metal as the ongoing model. However, it is quite clear it isn’t the ongoing generation mainly because it has a different wheelbase.
From the spy shots taken a while back, the front wheels are closer to the front overhangs than they should and the same happens with the rear wheels and the rear overhangs. This is a clear indication the new model of the Forester will have a longer wheelbase. This will translate into more space inside the cabin as well as a more stable car at high speeds. The longer wheelbase should also mean more trunk space which is average at best in the current model.
What Does the New Platform Mean?
For starters, the 2018 Forester is going to benefit from the increased stiffness of the chassis. This will allow it to be better to drive as well as safer. The new platform also offers a lower center of gravity which is quite important for a tall crossover. Some even suggested Subaru may return to their roots with this model and give the car the same powertrain as the WRX later down the road. The engines will likely be downsized in order to keep it competitive. We can expect a small 1.5 or 1.6 liter flat-four turbo with as much as 160 to 180 horsepower. A larger 2.0-liter turbo-four, likely the FA flat-four, with as much as 280 horsepower is also a real possibility. We also hope Subaru will decide to discontinue their CVT gearbox and replace it with a more modern transmission.
The 2018 Subaru Forester update gives us a good idea about the headlights and tail lights of the future model. From the spy shots, we can see the car will get smaller and differently position tail lights which will more definitely be LED lit. In the front, it seems the headlights will be smaller which likely means the new Forester will be much closer in design to the Impreza. If this is the case, then it should become a much prettier car than its predecessor.
REVIEW Feb 13, 2017 / Forester is far from its peak and is struggling to survive on the market. It is a compact crossover and this market has been saturated for quite some time. Sale of the Forester is nearly halved and the Japanese company must find new ways of keeping their customers. With 2018 Subaru Forester they might achieve their goal. However, there is scarce information about this model and the only thing we have are rumors. Although new Forester might look a bit different, we thought it would be interesting to write one of the first reviews of this car.
2018 Subaru Forester Release Date
Unfortunately, there are no clear indications when new Forester is going to be launched. In our assumption release won’t happen before the end of 2017. On the other hand, we can say few things about the price. Base model should cost around $21,000. You do not believe this crossover will be so cheap. If you check prices of other Subaru cars, you will change your mind.
Forester introduced nearly 20 years ago, and since then it’s had several ups and downs. Currently, the popularity of this crossover is going downward spiral, but people at Subaru hope they can change this trend. The fourth generation came out in 2012, and all members of this generation have longitudinal front-engine and four-wheel drive. A six-speed manual transmission is there as well. So far all members of this generation used either a 2.0l or a 2.5l, but we’ll see in the following paragraph what might be hidden under the hood of the upcoming model.

Specs of Subaru Forester 2018
There are many ongoing debates what engine is going to be used in the 2018 Subaru Forester. However, currently, there are no indications that new engine will be introduced. This means that the 2.0 liter and the 2.5 liters will still continue to power this compact crossover. We don’t want to hide our disappointment, but we know this is just a rumor and there are still no official announcements. At this moment we can only discuss the current lineup.
The standard engine is the 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an ability to generate 170 hp and the same amount of torque. The second option can deliver way more power and torque than the first one. The 2.0 liter comes with an output of 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. At this point, we are uncertain about fuel consumption. It is quite possible that Subaru is going to use lightweight materials which would lead to better fuel efficiency. There are some indications about a 1.6-liter, but you shouldn’t take this to the bank. We want to be careful with this information as well as with details about the transmission and driving system. However, it is most likely that new Subaru Forester 2018 won’t change the driving system and Forester will have AWD once again.
There are no reliable details about the exterior of the 2018 Subaru Forester. However, some interesting rumors might come true. Reportedly 2018 model should get an entirely new platform. There are some indications that Subaru is working on a new platform for Forester which should be more rigid than the previous one. Apart from this, it should be lighter thanks to new materials, and this could lead to improved fuel economy. Unfortunately, this is all we can tell regarding exterior and we must hold our horses for additional details.
Luckily there are more details about the cabin than about the exterior. Apparently, it is going to be more interesting than before. The current model has that dull gray color, but that is about to change with the 2018 Subaru Forester. The alleged cabin will be equipped with fewer buttons than before and it will be more functional. We just need to wait and see all features this crossover is going to have.
